Scammer lures victim through Facebook ad

:

After receiving a check from a client who reached out through Facebook, a Detroit man was stopped at a Birmingham bank on the 30000 block of Woodward Avenue after it was realized that the check was a fake.

The victim told Birmingham police that he got a text from someone in response to a Facebook advertisement for contracting services. The suspect reportedly told the victim that a check for the incorrect amount had been sent to him, and that the victim needed to send back the difference.

Birmingham police stated in their report that the scammer was trying to use the victim to cash a fake check for monetary gain. They say an investigation is ongoing.
