Fraudster poses as Oakland County Sheriff

An individual impersonating a representative of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department scammed a Birmingham resident out of roughly $1,000 by claiming the victim was issued citations that must be paid.

The imposter allegedly told the victim they must pay $8,200 to avoid being arrested for the issued citations. Birmingham police stated that the victim filed a report on Friday, January 5, after sending the money through a mobile app.

It was confirmed by Birmingham police that no individual under the imposter’s name works at the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

An investigation is underway, according to Birmingham police.
